The Bauchi Emirate Council has clarified that the Durbar Committee of the Bauchi Emirate Council requested the cancellation of this year's Durbar festival and sought approval from the state government.
The Council emphasised that Governor Bala Mohammed did not cancel the Sallah Durbar but merely approved the Emirate’s request.
In a statement issued on Friday night, the Secretary of the Bauchi Emirate Council, Alhaji Shehu Mudi Muhammad, explained that the Durbar Committee sought approval from the state government to cancel the event, and the government in good faith, granted the request.
The Emirate Council expressed deep regret over the confusion and disaffection caused by the situation.
“We have already extended our unreserved apology to His Excellency, Governor Bala Mohammed Abdulkadir (Kauran Bauchi), for the misunderstanding,” the statement read.
“We strongly urge all concerned parties to refrain from spreading misleading and unfounded information aimed at creating disaffection between the government of His Excellency Governor Bala Mohammed Abdulkadir and the Bauchi Emirate.”
The statement further emphasised that the relationship between the state government and the Emirate has always been one of mutual respect and cooperation, remaining unshaken despite attempts to sow discord.
Mudi reiterated the Bauchi Emirate Council’s commitment to fostering unity and understanding within the community.
“We sincerely apologize for any confusion caused and appreciate everyone’s continued support and understanding,” the statement concluded.
Recall that in a press release issued by Mukhtar Gidado, the media aide to the Bauchi State Governor, the state government announced its approval of the Bauchi Emirate Council’s Committee on Sallah Durbar’s decision to postpone the highly anticipated 2025 Durbar Festival.
The Sallah Durbar Festival has long been a pillar of Bauchi’s rich cultural heritage, attracting people from across Nigeria and beyond.
It serves as a symbol of unity, history, and identity, fostering communal pride while significantly contributing to the state’s social and economic vibrancy.
