In a striking departure from his usual calm demeanor, Rt. Hon. Kwamoti B. Laori, Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee investigating the alleged wrongful termination of Comrade Emmanuel Odafe Igbini (Engr.) by Total Energies EP Nigeria Ltd., captivated the House of Representatives with a presentation that turned heads and sparked lively conversation.
Dressed in full Bwatiye traditional regalia, complete with a royal staff known as So-Shopwe, Laori’s appearance was a proud celebration of his cultural heritage. This was a stark contrast to the simple African fabrics he typically dons as a ranking member of the House.
His signature kashe cap, a staple of his wardrobe, was also noticeably absent, making way for an elaborate, regal ensemble that resonated deeply with his roots.
As he laid the committee’s report before his colleagues, the atmosphere in the chamber shifted. What began as a routine session quickly became a moment of admiration and discussion, with members analyzing the elaborate regalia worn by the triple-titled Chief.
The spectacle was so compelling that the Minority Leader of the House felt compelled to invoke an order regarding members' attire, humorously yet seriously questioning whether the So-Shopwe constituted a weapon—a concern that required clarification.
This prompted an intervention from Speaker Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, GCON, to restore order and refocus the proceedings.
Beyond his impressive titles—Sunga-Takalo Bata from the Bata Traditional Council in Demsa, Kormo-Bachama from the Bachama Traditional Council, Murum-Bondo-Mbula from the Mbula Traditional Council, and Enyi-Oma Ndi-Igbo from the Igbo Traditional Council—Hon. Laori remains refreshingly humble.
Despite his many accolades and accomplishments as a Barrister and Doctor, Laori remains unburdened by the weight of his titles. Instead, he continues to embody the spirit of his people with grace, authenticity, and cultural pride.
This unexpected yet enriching moment not only highlighted Laori’s deep connection to his constituents but also underscored the importance of tradition, identity, and the vibrant tapestry of Nigerian culture in governance.
He has demonstrated the need for public figures to embrace their cultural heritage, honor their ancestral roots, and represent their backgrounds with pride.
On a lighter note, Speaker Abbas playfully mandated Minority Leader Hon. Kingsley Chinda to appear in his own traditional regalia at the next session, promising another colorful display in the House come Tuesday.
