The Acting Managing Director of the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC), Mr. Jimoh Haruna Gabi, has disclosed that proactive measures are being implemented to mitigate the impact of flooding in parts of Niger State during the rainy season.

Gabi made this known while addressing journalists in Minna on Friday.

He expressed the Commission’s deep concern over the recurrent flooding of farmlands in various parts of the state, particularly in the Muye area of Lapai Local Government Area.

According to him, the Commission has commenced the reconstruction of an erosion control embankment that was destroyed last year, as part of efforts to avert flood-related disasters in the current rainy season.

“This project was awarded at the cost of N600 million. It is aimed at protecting local farmers and their produce from the devastating effects of flooding in the area,” Gabi stated.

He noted that farmers in the region have endured years of severe hardship due to flooding, a situation worsened by the repeated collapse of previous embankments.

Gabi assured that the Commission would also reconstruct access roads damaged by floods and reclaim land that has been lost to erosion and flood over the years.

He added that upon completion, the project would enable affected farmers and fishermen to return to their traditional livelihoods.

“This initiative will help them regain their footing and continue farming and fishing, which have been their age-long occupations,” he said.
