The Chairman of Sabon Gari Local Government Area, Hon. Jamilu Abubakar Albani, has donated ₦500,000 as compensation to residents of the Kogin Mata community in Chikaji, who were affected by the devastating floods of 2024.
The presentation was made during a brief ceremony held at the council secretariat on Monday, May 19, 2025. Speaking at the event, the Chairman acknowledged the significant impact of the flooding, which displaced numerous households and caused widespread destruction to property, farmlands, and local infrastructure.
Hon. Albani emphasised the importance of supporting vulnerable communities and reaffirmed the local government's commitment to disaster response and recovery efforts.
“This support may not replace what was lost, but it is a sign that your cries were heard. We are committed to standing with you as we work to rebuild and prepare for the future,” he said.
Community leaders and residents expressed gratitude for the gesture, noting that it was the first official assistance many had received since the incident.
The ₦500,000 fund will be distributed among the most severely affected families to help them recover from their losses.
Local authorities also announced plans to implement long-term flood mitigation measures, including the construction of improved drainage systems and regular desilting of water channels.
