The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed that the explosion which rocked the Federal Capital Territory on Monday afternoon was the result of a failed suicide bombing attempt aimed at the Mogadishu Army Cantonment.

In a statement released on Tuesday, NEMA revealed that the incident occurred around 1:47 p.m. along the Mararaba-Nyanya expressway when a suspected suicide bomber wearing an improvised explosive device (IED) attempted to breach security at the military facility.

The device reportedly detonated prematurely, killing the bomber instantly and injuring a passerby. The injured civilian was promptly evacuated to the National Hospital by officers of the Nigeria Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit.

According to NEMA, the rapid response involved multiple security and emergency agencies including the Military, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). The entire emergency operation was concluded by 5:29 p.m.

“Preliminary information indicates that the suicide bomber was attempting to gain unauthorised entry into the barracks when the IED detonated,” NEMA stated. “Forensic experts have commenced investigations into the incident.”

Both the Nigerian Army and the FCT Command of the Nigeria Police had earlier confirmed the blast, assuring the public that comprehensive investigations were underway to determine the motive and possible affiliations of the attacker.

Monday’s attempted bombing has sparked fresh concerns about security around military installations and public areas in the capital, with authorities expected to heighten surveillance and counter-terrorism efforts in the coming days.
