The Director General/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILEST), Dr. Auwal Mustapha Imam, has flagged off the deployment of 25 youths from Zaria to undergo a two-week intensive training on leather and footwear production across five states.

The beneficiaries, all indigenous to Zaria, have been dispatched to NILEST Extension Centers located in Kogi, Nasarawa, Kebbi, Bauchi, and Gombe States. The training aims to provide hands-on skills in leatherwork, particularly shoe design and production, as part of a broader initiative to empower young people with practical, income-generating knowledge.

According to a statement signed by Nuhu Basheer Masa, Personal Assistant on Media and Communication to the DG, the program includes full accommodation for participants in hotels, provision of feeding, and comprehensive welfare throughout the training period.

“At the end of the workshop, each participant will receive a transportation stipend of N100,000, in addition to a starter pack worth thousands of naira to help them kick-start their entrepreneurial journey in leather and footwear production,” the statement added.

Dr. Imam reaffirmed his commitment to ensuring the continued participation of Zaria youths in all future training programs organized by NILEST nationwide. He emphasized that empowering the youth remains a core priority of the institute’s mandate to develop the leather and science technology sector.

The initiative is part of ongoing efforts to promote skill acquisition, job creation, and youth empowerment through vocational education and enterprise development.
