The Director General of the Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILEST), Dr. Auwal Mustapha Imam, has presented four key memoranda aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s innovation ecosystem at the 22nd Meeting of the National Council on Innovation, Science and Technology (NCIST), which began Monday, May 12, 2025, in Abuja.
The annual meeting, themed “Research, Develop, Innovate and Commercialize: A Cycle for National Prosperity,” is hosted by the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), under the leadership of its Director General, Dr. Mathew Olumide Adepoju, at the Boroffice Multipurpose Hall in NASRDA headquarters.
According to the Director General’s media aide, Nuhu Basheer Masa, “Dr. Auwal Mustapha Imam presented four memorandums aimed at advancing Nigeria's innovation ecosystem.” These submissions are designed to spark actionable dialogue on how best to leverage science and technology for national growth.
The meeting brought together major stakeholders from across the country, including commissioners for science and technology from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Directors General of federal agencies under the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, and other key players in the science and innovation sector.
The event was declared open by the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, Mrs. Esuabana Nko Asanye, who highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts in repositioning science and technology as drivers of economic diversification.
“This meeting represents a pivotal moment for harnessing science and technology to drive sustainable growth,” the release stated, underlining the significance of strategic collaboration and national synergy in innovation policymaking.
The four-day event, which runs through May 15, serves as a platform for evaluating policies and forging strategic paths toward commercializing research outcomes for national prosperity.
Dr. Imam’s participation signals NILEST’s increasing relevance in national innovation efforts, particularly in areas of industrial research, leather technology, and sustainable development.
