As Nigeria marks this year’s Democracy Day, Niger State Governor, Farmer Mohammed Umaru Bago, has called on Nigerians to reflect deeply on the progress made so far, renew their commitment to the democratic process, and uphold the principles of democracy.
In a message conveyed through his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, Governor Bago described Democracy Day as a powerful symbol of the triumph of the people’s collective will over dictatorship and tyranny. He said the occasion serves as a reminder of the struggles, sacrifices, and resilience of past heroes and heroines who fought for the restoration of democratic governance in Nigeria.
The governor noted that democracy has enabled transparency and accountability in governance, promoted political competition, allowed for the expression of diverse viewpoints, and enhanced civic engagement among citizens. However, he expressed concern that despite more than two decades of uninterrupted democratic rule since 1999, Nigeria has not yet reached its full potential. He emphasised that there is still much work to be done to strengthen the nation’s democracy.
Governor Bago stressed the need for continuous electoral reforms and increased civic participation, as well as the importance of building strong democratic institutions that protect the vulnerable, promote justice, and guarantee equal opportunities for all citizens. He believes that these steps are essential to advancing democracy and fostering national development.
Reassuring the people of Niger State, the governor reiterated his commitment to responsible leadership and inclusive governance that will ensure sustainable development and improved welfare for the populace. He affirmed that his administration will continue to deliver the dividends of democracy in line with the New Niger agenda.
He also appealed for continued prayers, support, and understanding from the people, expressing his unwavering resolve to build a more secure, transformed, and prosperous Niger State. According to him, with collective effort and purposeful leadership, the New Niger Project is not just a vision but a tangible possibility.
“I urge you all to continue to pray for leaders at all levels for a purposeful leadership. I reaffirm my commitment to the New Niger project, which is a possibility,” the governor stated.
