A cholera outbreak in Niger State has claimed at least 12 lives and left over 230 people hospitalised across multiple Local Government Areas (LGAs), prompting swift action from the state government.
The outbreak, initially detected in Shiroro LGA, has now spread to five additional LGAs: Minna, Bosso, Magama, Bisa, and Munya.
According to healthcare officials, a total of 239 cases have been recorded, with affected individuals receiving treatment at various primary healthcare centres in the impacted communities.
In response to the escalating situation, the state government has designated the old wing of the Late Senator Idris Kuta Primary Healthcare Centre in Minna as a temporary cholera isolation centre.
The Commissioner for Primary Healthcare, Dr. Ibrahim Dangana, confirmed the development and stated that a multi-sectoral response team has been deployed to contain the spread and manage the crisis.
He urged residents to remain calm but vigilant, and to adhere strictly to public health guidelines, including proper sanitation and prompt reporting of symptoms such as severe diarrhoea and vomiting.
Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, while efforts are being intensified to ensure clean water supply and public sensitization across affected areas.
