The management of Jos Electricity Distribution Plc (JED Plc) has announced the official launch of the Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP) Metering Scheme, aimed at improving service delivery and reducing the metering gap across its franchise areas—Bauchi, Benue, Gombe, and Plateau States.
In a press release issued by the acting Managing Director/CEO, Alh. Mammanlafia Umar, and made available to journalists in Bauchi yesterday, the initiative is set to begin with a pilot phase in Plateau State.
Under the scheme, 109,000 prepaid meters will be distributed free of charge, exclusively to customers on Band A feeders. According to Umar, the exercise will cater only to existing unmetered customers and those with faulty meters on Band A lines.
He emphasized that the program does not cover new connections, which must still go through the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) framework. In addition, no direct connections will be allowed on Band A feeders without proper application.
Umar reiterated that the DISREP meters are entirely free, warning customers not to make any payments to staff or agents during the process.
“Any customer who makes such payments does so at their own risk. The company will not be liable for any losses incurred. Fraud-related complaints must be reported—along with evidence—via our official communication channels,” he stated.
The acting MD explained that the new meters come with advanced technological features aimed at improving efficiency, security, and transparency. These features include:
-
Automated token upload, eliminating manual entry via the User Interface Unit (UIU)
-
Geo-lock functionality, ensuring meters only work at assigned GPS locations
-
Real-time consumption monitoring, with alerts sent to JED Plc when tokens are exhausted or inactive for a prolonged period
-
Tamper and bypass detection, with instant notifications
-
Complete installation kits, including meters, UIUs, and meter cards
He further disclosed that customers who receive the new meters will be required to visit the nearest JED Plc office to validate their debt profiles in line with regulatory directives.
Eligible customers can also benefit from the ongoing Debt Validation and Discount Promo, which offers:
-
30% discount for customers who clear their total outstanding debts in full
-
25% discount for customers opting for a three-year instalment plan
JED Plc appealed to customers—particularly those on Band A feeders—to cooperate with field staff during meter validation and profiling.
“For complaints or further clarifications, customers are encouraged to visit any JED Plc Customer Care Centre. Regular updates on the DISREP Metering Scheme will also be shared via our official social media platforms and website: www.jedplc.com,” the statement concluded.
