The leadership of the National Sports Commission (NSC) has officially inaugurated an electoral committee to oversee the forthcoming elections into 20 national sports federations.
In a statement signed by Dr. (Mrs.) Kehinde Ajayi, FCAI, ANIPR, Director of Press at the NSC, the newly inaugurated committee is tasked with the responsibility of conducting free, fair, and transparent elections across various federations. These include Aquatics, Chess, Handball, Golf, Karate, Darts, Fives, and Tennis, among others.
Other federations scheduled for elections are Wrestling, Wushu Kung Fu, Scrabble, Hockey, Badminton, Boxing, Taekwondo, Squash Rackets, Traditional Sports, Rugby, Kickboxing, and Deaf Sports.
Speaking during the inauguration, the Chairman of the NSC, Mallam Shehu Dikko, expressed confidence in the committee’s capacity to deliver credible elections.
“We have succeeded in selecting a balanced and compact team for this important assignment because we want to set a new standard in how federation elections are conducted—with utmost integrity and transparency,” Dikko stated.
He emphasized the administration’s commitment to professionalism, citing the vision entrusted to them by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.
“Myself and the Director General were appointed by Mr. President to bring a new approach to sports administration. We have no partisan interest. Our only interest is to ensure that individuals elected are aligned with our vision of building a sustainable sports economy, in line with the mandate given to us.”
He further assured stakeholders that the Commission would not interfere in the electoral process but would provide necessary guidance to uphold credibility.
Also speaking, the Director General of the NSC, Hon. Bukola Olopade, reiterated the Commission’s dedication to a transparent process, stating that the composition of the committee was done with careful deliberation.
“We are very intentional about everything we do at the Commission, and forming this robust electoral team is a reflection of that,” Olopade said. “We needed an astute group that can withstand the challenges that come with elections of this scale, and we are confident that this committee fits the bill.”
The Electoral Committee is chaired by Dr. Simon Ebhojiaye, a seasoned sports administrator and technocrat. He expressed gratitude for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to deliver on the task.
“I am confident that the NSC’s decision to bring together this team will yield the desired results. We will adhere strictly to the Commission’s guidelines and work diligently to conduct elections that the NSC and the Nigerian public will be proud of,” Dr. Ebhojiaye assured.
Other members of the committee include:
Vice Chairman: Barrister Samson Ebomhe
Members: Lawal Waheed, Hon. Tunde Popoola, Barrister Maryam Orotope Paul, Farouk Yarma
Secretary: Rita Mosindi
The elections are expected to set the tone for a new era in Nigerian sports federation governance, with transparency, accountability, and professionalism at its core.
