The Board of Trustees of Al-Ansar University, Maiduguri, has approved the appointment of Professor Fanna Inna Abdulrahman, FCSN, FICCON, as Acting Vice-Chancellor of the institution, effective Monday, September 8, 2025.
The appointment, made on the recommendation of the university’s Governing Council, is in accordance with the First Schedule, Section 4(2) and 3(1) of the law establishing the university.
This was contained in an official press release issued and signed by the Registrar of Al-Ansar University, Malam Bukar Usman, FCIA.
“Professor Fanna Inna Abdulrahman has been appointed Acting Vice-Chancellor of Al-Ansar University, Maiduguri, with effect from Monday, 8th September, 2025,” the statement read.
Until her new role, Prof. Fanna was a lecturer in the Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry at the University of Maiduguri, where she is currently on sabbatical. At Al-Ansar University, she has served as Head of the Department of Chemistry and Coordinator of Examinations and Time Table. She is also the immediate past Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Central Administration) at Kashim Ibrahim University, Maiduguri.
Born on March 5, 1963, in Maiduguri, Borno State, Prof. Fanna hails from Ngumati in Monguno Local Government Area. She began her education at Yerwa Central Primary School, Maiduguri, obtaining her First School Leaving Certificate in 1975. She later attended Federal Government Girls College, Owerri, Imo State, where she earned her West African School Certificate in 1980.
She obtained her B.Sc. in Chemistry (1987), M.Sc. in Organic Chemistry (1992), MPA (1997), and Ph.D. in Organic/Medicinal Chemistry (2004), all from the University of Maiduguri.
Prof. Fanna began her academic career in 1988 as a Graduate Assistant at the University of Maiduguri and rose to the rank of Professor of Medicinal Chemistry in 2011. Over the years, she has taught and supervised more than 150 undergraduate students, 35 M.Sc. theses, and 15 Ph.D. dissertations—five of whom are now Professors.
Her research focuses on Organic and Natural Product Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Environmental Pollution, Impact Assessment, and Management. She has published more than 150 scholarly articles in reputable local and international journals and presented at over 25 academic conferences globally.
Prof. Fanna has held several leadership roles including Level Coordinator, Remedial Coordinator, Head of Department (Chemistry) for 12 years, Sub-Dean and Dean of the Faculty of Science. She has served on numerous academic and administrative committees at the University of Maiduguri, including the Departmental and Faculty Postgraduate Committees, Board of Research Journal of Science, Faculty Seminar Committee, and the Committee of Provost, Deans and Directors. She was also Coordinator of the Centre for Research and Innovation.
She is a Fellow of the Chemical Society of Nigeria and the Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria. Currently, she serves as the President and Chairman of Council of the Institute of Chartered Chemists of Nigeria. She is also a member of the Governing Councils of both Al-Ansar University, Maiduguri, and the Federal University of Agriculture, Zuru.
Her appointment is seen by many in the academic community as a strategic move to consolidate Al-Ansar University’s rising profile and commitment to academic excellence and leadership.
