The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has charged newly Police Constables to uphold the core values of integrity, discipline, and professionalism in the discharge of their duties.
He cautioned them to shun all forms of corruption, extortion, and abuse of power, reminding them that the police uniform is a symbol of trust, not intimidation or oppression of the very citizens they are sworn to protect.
The IGP gave the charge during the Passing-Out Parade of the 2023 Batch of Police Constables held on Tuesday at the Police Training School, Bauchi, where 720 constables successfully completed their training from the school.
A total of 720 police constables graduated from the Bauchi Police Training School, comprising recruits from seven states; Adamawa (13), Bauchi (221), Borno (8), Gombe (185), Jigawa (271), Kano (14), and Katsina (8).
Represented by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Zone 12 Bauchi, Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, the IGP emphasised that policing is not merely a job but a sacred duty that demands honesty, compassion, and respect for human rights.
"Your conduct must always reflect professionalism and integrity. Uphold the rule of law, act with fairness, and remember that the true measure of your success lies in the safety, peace, and confidence of the communities you serve," Egbetokun said.
The event, which took place simultaneously across all Police Colleges and Training Schools nationwide, marked the end of six months of intensive training that tested the recruits' endurance, discipline, and commitment.
The IGP disclosed that with this batch, the Force has recruited a total of 20,000 constables since he assumed office. He added that the recruits have been trained under a modernised curriculum emphasising community partnership, intelligence-led policing, and respect for human rights.
Egbetokun also announced that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the recruitment of an additional 30,000 constables over the next few years, a move aimed at closing manpower gaps and enhancing security across the country.
"Through the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, the Police Force continues to benefit from renewed investments in manpower, logistics, and welfare, all critical to building a modern and people-centred institution," he noted.
The IGP stated that under his leadership, the Force remains committed to reform, professionalism, and building a police institution Nigerians can trust and be proud of.
He revealed that immediately after the Passing-Out Parade, the implementation of the presidential approval for 30,000 additional constables will commence.
"In line with our community-oriented policing strategy, most of the newly graduated constables have been deployed to their states of origin to strengthen local trust, improve intelligence gathering, and enhance community collaboration," he said.
Egbetokun expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his unwavering support and genuine commitment to police transformation, which continues to inspire the Force’s drive for reform and improved service delivery.
He reassured Nigerians that the Police remain fully committed to protecting lives and property, enforcing the law without fear or favour, and maintaining the highest standards of accountability and professionalism.
"We will continue to build strong partnerships with communities because securing our nation requires collective effort. Together, we can create a peaceful society where every Nigerian can live and thrive without fear," he concluded.
