Niger State Governor, Farmer Mohammed Umaru Bago, has hosted practising journalists in the state to an end-of-the-year dinner, marking the beginning of a renewed and strengthened partnership between the media and his administration.
The dinner brought together officials of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Niger State Council, members of the Correspondents’ Chapel, media executives, and other practising journalists across the state. The event was held at the Hauwa Wali Multi-Purpose Hall, Government House, Minna, where guests were treated to a sumptuous meal.
In his remarks, Governor Bago said the gathering was organized to appreciate journalists for their sustained support to his administration and their contributions to the growth and development of Niger State. He noted that the event also signified the beginning of a new chapter aimed at strengthening the already cordial relationship between the state government and the media.
The governor, who also used the occasion to formally introduce the newly appointed Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Obed Nuhu Nana, directed him to ensure that such engagements with journalists are organized periodically.
“We want to see an even better relationship, especially with journalists in Niger State,” the governor said.
Governor Bago further unveiled the Niger State Compendium of Two Years of Service, urging journalists to adopt the document as an authoritative reference and baseline for investigative journalism.
In his response, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Mr. Obed Nuhu Nana, expressed appreciation to the governor for the opportunity to serve and for hosting the dinner. He assured journalists that the new phase of collaboration between the government and the media would be continuously strengthened.
The Chairman of the NUJ, Niger State Council, Comrade Abu Nmodu, described the gathering as symbolic, noting that it reflects the governor’s openness and deliberate commitment to partnering with journalists in the state.
He disclosed that Governor Bago has graciously approved the hosting of a Media Summit in Niger State, which will be held once technical arrangements are concluded.
Comrade Nmodu thanked the governor, saying:
“This is the beginning of greater things to come in media–government relations. Insha Allah, it will usher in better days for media practitioners and enable all of us to key into the Niger State Development Agenda—the New Niger Agenda.”
Earlier, the Secretary to the Government of Niger State, Alhaji Abubakar Usman, said the dinner provided a platform to build and sustain a stronger and more productive relationship with practising journalists in the state.
The event concluded with a special prayer for peace and prosperity in Niger State and Nigeria at large, as well as for the safe return of the remaining abducted Papiri schoolchildren.
