Niger State Governor, Farmer Mohammed Umaru Bago, has announced that his administration has awarded a multi-billion-naira contract for the reconstruction of the Minna General Hospital.
Governor Bago disclosed this when he received executive members of the Association of Proprietors of Private Health Tertiary Institutions in Niger (APPTIN), who paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House, Minna.
He acknowledged the vital role of the private sector—particularly in healthcare—and noted that the quality of education and graduates produced by private institutions has contributed significantly to improving the sector. He challenged private health tertiary institutions in the state to support government efforts by producing the medical personnel needed to run the remodeled Minna General Hospital and the newly equipped IBB Specialist Hospital.
The governor explained that increasing the number of healthcare centres across the state is essential for improved service delivery and for meeting United Nations healthcare indices. He therefore emphasized the need for stronger collaboration with private institutions, especially those in the health sector.
Governor Bago also revealed that he has forwarded a bill to the State House of Assembly seeking to repeal the law establishing IBB University, with the aim of restructuring the institution to become self-sustaining and more affordable for students.
Chairman of APPTIN, Ambassador Mujahid Adamu Dikko, commended the governor for his commitment to expanding healthcare services across Niger State. He said private health institutions remain committed to complementing government’s efforts, particularly in manpower development to meet the needs of citizens.
Amb. Dikko also used the occasion to commiserate with the governor and the people of the state over the recent attack on St. Mary’s School, Papiri, in Agwara Local Government Area, where schoolchildren were abducted.
The association later presented Governor Bago with an Award of Excellence in recognition of his support for the growth of private health tertiary institutions in the state.
