Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday announced the appointment of Senator Shehu Buba (APC, Bauchi) as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Livestock and Animal Husbandry. The committee is expected to play a pivotal role as Nigeria intensifies reforms in the livestock sector and seeks sustainable solutions to recurring farmer-herder conflicts.

Akpabio also named three other senators to head critical standing committees of the upper chamber, appointments he said were aimed at strengthening legislative oversight and ensuring the Senate responds effectively to emerging national priorities.

Senator Abdullahi Yahaya (APC, Kebbi) was appointed Chairman of the Committee on National Intelligence and National Security, positioning him at the centre of legislative oversight over the country’s security architecture.

Senator Osita Ngwu (PDP, Enugu) was announced as acting Chairman of the Committee on Air Force, where he will oversee matters relating to air operations and defence aviation.

Rounding off the list, Senator Musa Mustapha (APC, Yobe) was appointed Chairman of the Committee on National Planning, a committee central to shaping Nigeria’s development blueprint and economic trajectory.

Akpabio stated that the new appointments were necessary to improve efficiency and enable the Senate to address urgent issues in national security, economic planning, and agricultural reforms.

The announcement comes shortly after the Senate dissolved two key security-related committees, the Committee on National Security and Intelligence and the Committee on Air Force.

Before their dissolution, Senator Shehu Buba (Bauchi South) chaired the National Security and Intelligence Committee, while Senator Godiya Akwashiki (Nasarawa North) headed the Air Force Committee.
