Ex-Pension Boss Maina Released After Serving Eight-Year Jail Term for Money Laundering

Abdulrasheed Maina, former chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), has been released from prison after serving an eight-year jail term.

Maina had been incarcerated at the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja. Although the exact date of his release remains unclear, sources told TheCable that he has been out of custody for several weeks.

In November 2021, a Federal High Court in Abuja convicted Maina over offences bordering on money laundering involving more than ₦2 billion. He was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in October 2019 on a 12-count charge, which he denied.

Delivering judgment, Justice Okon Abang held that Maina stole over ₦2 billion belonging to pensioners, many of whom, the judge noted, “died without enjoying the fruits of their labour.”

The court further found that Maina concealed his identity as a signatory to bank accounts by using the names of family members without their knowledge. Justice Abang convicted him on all 12 counts and sentenced him to a cumulative 61 years in prison, to run concurrently, effectively amounting to an eight-year term beginning from October 25, 2019, the date of his arraignment.

Maina challenged the ruling at the Court of Appeal, but in May 2023, the appellate court affirmed both his conviction and sentence.
