Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Thursday met with President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.
Makinde arrived at the Presidential Villa shortly after Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang. Sources at the State House said President Tinubu held separate meetings with the two governors.
The meeting comes amid lingering political tensions, as Makinde, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), recently declared that he would not support President Tinubu’s re-election bid, citing concerns over the future of democracy in Nigeria.
The Oyo governor has also openly spoken about his rift with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, alleging that the former Rivers State governor vowed to “deliver the PDP” to Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections without consulting other party stakeholders.
Ahead of the 2023 presidential election, Makinde was a key member of the G5 governors within the PDP who refused to support the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar. The group, led by Wike, argued that the PDP presidential candidate should not emerge from the same region as the party’s national chairman.
Despite Oyo being governed by the PDP, President Tinubu, then the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, won the presidential election in the state.
Relations between Makinde and Wike later deteriorated, with both politicians reportedly locked in a struggle for control of party structures.
