Senegal on Sunday night edged hosts Morocco 1–0 after extra time to win the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final in Rabat, in a dramatic encounter marked by VAR controversy, lengthy stoppages and tense scenes on the pitch.

The final, played at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, was thrown into turmoil late in regulation time after a disputed penalty was awarded to Morocco following a VAR review. The decision sparked furious protests from Senegalese players, who surrounded the referee as play was halted for several minutes.

The situation escalated as players from both teams briefly left the pitch before returning following interventions by match officials and security personnel.

Morocco failed to capitalise on the opportunity when Brahim Díaz saw his stoppage-time penalty — a Panenka attempt — saved by Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy, further heightening tensions inside the stadium.

With regulation time ending goalless, the match moved into extra time amid a charged atmosphere. Senegal eventually broke the deadlock in the 94th minute when Pape Gueye unleashed a stunning long-range strike into the top corner.

Morocco pressed hard for an equaliser, hitting the crossbar and forcing several late saves, but Senegal’s defence held firm to secure the victory.

The final lasted well beyond its scheduled time due to repeated stoppages caused by protests, VAR consultations and crowd unrest.

Senegal’s triumph crowned them African champions after one of the most dramatic and controversial finals in recent AFCON history, played before a packed home crowd in Rabat.
