Kano State is awash with excitement following a landmark political development
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has officially transmitted the nomination of Murtala Sule Garo to the Kano State House of Assembly for confirmation as Deputy Governor, bringing to a close a period of eager anticipation across the state.
The announcement sparked widespread jubilation, with residents and party supporters taking to the streets to celebrate what many are describing as a unifying and forward-looking choice for the state.
In an official statement issued by the Governor's Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, the nomination was made in strict compliance with Section 191(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which empowers the Governor to fill a vacancy in the office of the Deputy Governor. The vacancy arose following the voluntary resignation of former Deputy Governor Comrade Abdussalam Gwarzo on March 27, 2026.
Governor Yusuf's choice followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders across the state. The APC legacy group, under the distinguished leadership of former National Chairman Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, had presented three credible names for consideration: Murtala Sule Garo, Alhassan Kabiru Rurum (serving House of Representatives member for the Rano/Kibiya/Bunkure Federal Constituency), and Sulaiman Bichi, former Secretary to the State Government.
After carefully weighing the options, the Governor settled on Garo, a capable choice that resonated strongly with the vast majority of stakeholders, including former Governor Ganduje, key federal lawmakers, and a broad cross-section of APC leaders from Kano.
At 48, Murtala Sule Garo brings a wealth of experience and an impressive track record of public service spanning over two decades. His distinguished career includes serving as State Organising Secretary of the APC, Special Adviser to the Kano State Governor, elected Chairman of Kabo Local Government, Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) Kano Chapter, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and Deputy Governorship Candidate of the APC in the 2023 general elections.
His deep roots in governance, grassroots politics, and administrative leadership make him an exceptionally capable complement to Governor Yusuf's vision for Kano State.
In his statement, Governor Yusuf expressed confidence that Garo's nomination represents a significant step toward strengthening governance and sustaining effective service delivery across Kano State.
