Crisis has erupted in the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) election in Zamfara State following the suspension of the exercise, as contending parties failed to agree on the modalities for electing new leadership of the forum.

In a press release signed by the YPP Chairman, Ambassador Adamu Yusuf Tsafe, it was stated that the election could not hold due to the alleged misconduct of certain individuals from one political party, the Action Peoples Party (APM), who reportedly acted against the majority of political parties in the state under the IPAC umbrella.

The statement further noted that concerned members, who constitute over two-thirds of the council, resolved to resist any attempt to impose the APM chairman as the caretaker committee chairman. It added that, in the interest of peace, the formation of any caretaker committee must reflect the will of the majority.

According to the release, this is the second time the current National Chairman of IPAC has been involved in a similar failed exercise in Zamfara State. It is alleged that during a previous attempt to conduct or oversee an election, efforts to impose preferred candidates led to disagreements, resulting in the dissolution of the council and the appointment of a caretaker committee.

Zamfara State, the statement said, is witnessing what it described as a repeat of such undemocratic practices.

It further alleged that certain individuals, led by the National Chairman, came to Zamfara to supervise an election that could have been concluded peacefully but was disrupted due to what it described as vested interests, leading to its eventual cancellation.

The statement also claimed that the National Chairman of the APM, who doubles as the National Chairman of IPAC, mobilised party members—including an APM national officer acting as secretary of the Zamfara State electoral committee and the Sokoto State APM chairman—to allegedly orchestrate the installation of their preferred candidate, who is the APM Zamfara State Chairman.

It added that upon realising their plan had failed, the group allegedly sponsored thugs who disrupted the election venue.

“We believe their actions were deliberate, aimed at creating an opportunity to impose their candidate as caretaker chairman,” the statement concluded.
