The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have commenced an indefinite strike over unresolved disputes with the Federal Government.

Speaking at Ahmadu Bello University, the SSANU Branch Chairman, Comrade Shuaibu Halilu Ahmed, said the action followed the expiration of a 30-day ultimatum issued from April 1 to April 30, 2026. The ultimatum demanded the conclusion and implementation of the renegotiated 2009 agreement for non-teaching staff.

Ahmed noted that while the agreement with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) had been concluded, that of the non-teaching unions remains unresolved. He criticised what he described as the lopsided distribution of the ₦50 billion allowance, as well as the non-payment of two months’ withheld salaries and outstanding 25 and 35 per cent wage award arrears. He also raised concerns over the continued poor funding of universities.

According to him, a meeting held with the government on March 31 ended without resolution after the government proposed a 30 per cent salary increase, which fell short of the unions’ demand for 45 per cent.

Ahmed said the strike was prompted by disputes over salary equity, working conditions, and the government’s failure to honour agreements. He urged members to remain united and fully comply with the directive until further notice.

The strike is expected to significantly disrupt activities across public universities nationwide, as non-teaching staff play a critical role in the administration and smooth operation of the institutions.
