Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, will represent Nigeria at the 2026 ENACTUS World Cup scheduled to hold in São Paulo, Brazil, in November, after its team emerged champion of the 2026 ENACTUS Nigeria National Competition.
The university secured the opportunity after the ENACTUS ABU team emerged overall winner of the national competition held at the Civic Centre, Lekki, Lagos, from August 11 to 15, 2026.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Public Affairs Directorate, Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, the victory qualified the team to represent Nigeria at the global competition, where teams from 36 ENACTUS countries are expected to showcase their entrepreneurial and social innovation projects.
The national competition brought together ENACTUS teams from universities and polytechnics across Nigeria. Participating teams presented projects before a panel comprising academics, business leaders, entrepreneurs and industry experts.
The ABU team's winning project focused primarily on challenges along the tomato agricultural value chain, particularly pre-harvest pest infestation and post-harvest losses.
The Faculty Advisor of the ENACTUS ABU team, Prof. M.K. Aliyu, mni, described the victory as a significant milestone for the university, the team and the communities affected by the project.
Aliyu attributed the success to months of research, community engagement, product development, farmer training and partnership building, as well as the dedication of students, alumni, mentors, partners and members of the university community.
“As we prepare to represent the university and Nigeria on the global stage, we dearly and deeply seek the continued support of ABU management to project the university in this positive enterprise,” Aliyu said.
He also expressed appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor and the university management for their continued support for student innovation and entrepreneurship programmes.
The Faculty Adviser acknowledged the contributions of the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services (NAERLS), East-West Seed Nigeria, ICERFE and the Department of Crop Protection, saying their technical expertise and research support strengthened the team's project and helped transform the students' ideas into practical impact.
Prof. Aliyu led the ABU delegation, comprising team leaders and more than 150 members, to the national competition in Lagos.
The student leadership of the team included Abdulfattah O. Omisanya, Team Leader; Augustine Onoja, Project Manager; George O. Otegwu, Secretary General; Hajara Abdulmumin, Financial Secretary; Mohammad Kabiru Umar, Technical Director; and Peace John, Social Media Officer.
With the national title secured, the ENACTUS ABU team is now set to take its tomato value-chain innovation to the global stage in Brazil, representing both Ahmadu Bello University and Nigeria at the 2026 ENACTUS World Cup.
