By Idris Umar, Zaria

Students of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (ABU), have called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration to intensify efforts in addressing Nigeria’s worsening security challenges.

The call was made during a special programme organised by the Ahmadu Bello University Students’ Representative Council (SRC) to commemorate Democracy Day, observed annually on June 12.

The event held at the Assembly Hall of the university’s Samaru campus in Zaria and was attended by students, lecturers, and representatives of various government agencies.

Speaking at the event, the Director of Operations of the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Mr. Mustafa Iyal, said the Tinubu administration has demonstrated commitment to improving education through the provision of student financial support and loans.

He noted that since the establishment of NELFUND, many students across the country have benefited from tuition support and monthly stipends, which have helped ease financial burdens and allow them to focus on their studies.

In his remarks, the President of the Ahmadu Bello University Students’ Union, Comrade Abdul-Rahaman Halliru Saraki, emphasized the importance of Democracy Day to Nigeria’s development and urged the federal government and security agencies to do more to tackle insecurity.

He expressed concern over the continued abduction of students in some parts of the country, stressing that peace and security remain essential pillars for quality education and national development.

Saraki also commended the Tinubu administration for launching the NELFUND programme, describing it as a major opportunity for Nigerian students seeking higher education.
He called on the federal government to expand the scheme to benefit more students and prayed for continued peace and progress in Nigeria.

Malam Isma’il Magaji, who represented the North Project Commission Office (NPCO), highlighted the government’s efforts in providing student loan scholarships.

He explained that many students have already benefited from the programme, noting that some people misunderstand it and assume it is the same as commercial bank loans.
He clarified that the scheme is designed to support students by paying their school fees and reducing financial burdens.

He also stated that the delegation visited Ahmadu Bello University to celebrate with students who have benefited from the programme and to advise them on how best to make use of the opportunity.

He further praised the students of Ahmadu Bello University for their discipline, diligence, and academic excellence.

The event ended peacefully with strong participation from students and government representatives.
