The Niger State chapter of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said it nominated Hon. Abdulrahman Awal as its candidate for the House of Representatives seat representing Bida, Gbako, and Katcha Federal Constituency based on merit.
The State Secretary of the party, Dr. Joseph Mamman, stated this while presenting and signing the party's nomination forms for Hon. Abdulrahman Awal ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to Dr. Joseph, the party carefully considered all aspirants before arriving at its decision. He said the NDC is committed to the principles of democracy, equal opportunity, and inclusive participation, adding that Hon. Abdulrahman Awal distinguished himself through his dedication to community development despite the personal challenges he has faced.
He noted that Awal has consistently demonstrated resilience, commitment, and leadership, qualities that convinced the party that he is well-positioned to represent the people of Bida, Gbako, and Katcha Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
Also speaking, a former senatorial candidate and a leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement in Niger State, Hon. Danladi Umar Abdulhamid, described Hon. Abdulrahman Awal as a capable and credible candidate who stands out among contestants from other political parties.
He said Awal's physical disability has never prevented him from making meaningful contributions to society, adding that he has achieved more than many politicians without disabilities.
Hon. Abdulhamid called on the people of Bida, Gbako, and Katcha Federal Constituency to support Awal's candidacy, expressing confidence that he would provide quality representation if elected.
Responding to questions from journalists, Hon. Abdulrahman Awal said his ambition is driven by a genuine desire to serve the people rather than personal gain. He explained that he accepted the party's nomination only after consulting widely with his supporters and constituents.
«"We may not have money, but we have God and we have the support of our people. Anyone who wants to know who Abdulrahman Awal is should examine my record of service to the community, both in public service and in politics," he said.»
He added that, as an indigene of the constituency, he understands the needs and aspirations of the people and is committed to providing effective and people-oriented representation.
Hon. Abdulrahman Awal previously served as the representative of persons with disabilities in the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP) at the national level.
Before joining the NNPP, he actively participated in the All Progressives Congress (APC), where he contributed to the party's campaigns during the elections that produced President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Niger State Governor Umar Mohammed Bago.
He explained that he later left the APC due to what he described as inadequate inclusion of persons with disabilities and insufficient attention to the welfare of ordinary Nigerians. He subsequently joined the NNPP, where he rose to become one of the party's national leaders before eventually moving to the NDC.
