Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has called on communities in Agwara and Borgu Local Government Areas to embrace peace and coexistence as a foundation for sustainable development in the state.
The governor made the call during a peace and reconciliation meeting with representatives of the Fulani, Boko, Bariba, and Kambari communities from the two local government areas, held in Kontagora.
The meeting formed part of the state government's ongoing efforts to address the recurring communal clashes affecting parts of Niger State.
Governor Bago described the loss of lives and destruction of property resulting from the conflicts as unfortunate and unacceptable, stressing the need for tolerance, mutual understanding, and peaceful coexistence among the affected communities.
He said his administration was deeply concerned about the persistent clashes, explaining that the engagement was convened to identify the root causes of the conflicts and develop lasting solutions.
The governor reminded participants that both Islam and Christianity preach peace, love, and mutual respect, urging them to serve as worthy ambassadors of their respective faiths by adhering to the teachings of their holy books.
Governor Bago also encouraged the communities to work together in establishing a joint community security outfit that would be trained by security agencies with the support of the state government to complement ongoing efforts to combat crime and enhance security.
He assured the communities of his administration's commitment to providing essential social amenities and creating an enabling environment for residents to live productive lives and contribute meaningfully to the state's development.
In his remarks, the member representing Borgu/Agwara Federal Constituency, Jafaru Mohammed, described the peace meeting as a significant step towards restoring lasting peace in the affected communities. He appealed to all stakeholders to remain committed to the resolutions reached during the engagement.
Speaking on behalf of their respective communities, the Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Agwara Local Government Area, Tijjani Yakubu; the Fulani Leader of Agwara Local Government, Alhaji Suleiman Sadiq; and the Chairman of the Agwara Kambari Community, Ibrahim Ahmed, reaffirmed their commitment to peaceful coexistence.
They pledged to work collectively towards promoting peace and unity across Agwara, Borgu, and neighbouring communities, while commending Governor Bago for his leadership and commitment to ending communal conflicts in the state.
