The Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) and the Nigeria Union of Mine Workers (NUMW) have agreed to collaborate to enhance government revenue generation.
The agreement was reached during a stakeholders' engagement between the agency and the union held at the NRS Secretariat in Minna, Niger State.
Speaking during the meeting, the NRS Controller, Malam Aliyu Ango, urged the union's leadership to educate its members on the Federal Government's new revenue payment system to ensure compliance, regularize their records, and prevent revenue leakages.
Ango said the agency was committed to addressing challenges affecting revenue generation by adopting appropriate strategies in line with the Federal Government's policy objectives.
He commended the union's leadership for fostering unity among its members and supporting government efforts to develop Nigeria's solid minerals sector, which remains one of the Federal Government's priority areas.
Responding, the Niger State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Mine Workers (NUMW) and Deputy National Treasurer of the union, Comrade Musa Adamu Nasko, appreciated the agency for the engagement and reaffirmed the union's commitment to supporting government initiatives aimed at national development, peace, and sustainable livelihoods for mining communities.
Nasko, however, appealed to the agency to work closely with the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development to address concerns over multiple taxation.
He explained that many miners already operate under government-approved cooperative societies through which they fulfil their financial obligations to the government. According to him, the introduction of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) registration requirement under the new payment system could result in miners being subjected to double taxation if not properly harmonised.
He urged the agency to consider the union's concerns and work collaboratively with stakeholders to ensure efficient revenue collection without placing unnecessary financial burdens on miners.
Nasko also described mine workers as law-abiding citizens who have consistently complied with government regulations, assuring the agency that the union would continue to educate its members on the need to obey the law and support government policies.
At the end of the meeting, the NRS Controller presented the Federal Government's newly approved revenue payment system to the union's leadership.
