The emerging cracks, political observers believe, stem largely from the aftermath of the APC consensus primaries, allegations of exclusion of key stakeholders from the party's decision-making process, and concerns over internal party leadership and consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to sources familiar with the ongoing consultations, several aggrieved political figures who served under both the current administration and previous APC governments have intensified meetings aimed at reviewing their political options. Among those reportedly involved are former commissioners, former special advisers, members of the Niger State House of Assembly who failed to secure the party's tickets, as well as numerous grassroots mobilisers spread across the state's 25 local government areas.
The situation is said to have been further heightened following recent public comments credited to Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago regarding the possible review of records of former political office holders, a development some stakeholders reportedly interpreted as politically unsettling.
Christian Stakeholders Demand Inclusive Ticket
Adding another dimension to the unfolding political developments is the debate surrounding the APC's 2027 governorship ticket.
A coalition known as the Concerned Christian Stakeholders in Niger State has publicly advocated for the retention of a Christian deputy governorship candidate, arguing that the state's religious diversity should continue to be reflected in the party's leadership arrangement.
Speaking on behalf of the coalition, its Secretary, Comrade Jude Johnson, maintained that Christians have made significant contributions to the growth and electoral successes of the APC in Niger State and therefore deserve equitable representation.
However, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has since announced the incumbent Deputy Governor, Comrade Yakubu Garba, as his preferred running mate for the 2027 governorship election, urging party members to remain united and avoid actions capable of undermining peace and development in the state.
Niger Rescue Movement Aligns with ADC
In another significant political development, the Niger Rescue Movement (NRM) Political Family has formally declared its intention to align with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 elections.
Addressing journalists in Minna, Chairman of the movement, Honourable Mikail El-Amin Bmitosahi, described the decision as the outcome of extensive consultations with political leaders and stakeholders across the state.
According to him, the movement seeks a platform capable of providing what he described as effective leadership, quality education, improved healthcare, employment opportunities, security, portable water supply and better infrastructure for Niger State.
He announced plans to mobilise the movement's structures across the 25 local government areas in support of the ADC while assuring that its campaign would focus on issues and policy alternatives rather than political hostility.
Bmitosahi expressed confidence that the ADC offers an opportunity for broader political participation, particularly for young people, while calling on supporters and like-minded citizens to join what he described as a movement for political renewal.
Reacting to the recent political realignments, the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hajiya Hadiza Ibrahim Kuta, urged politicians who have expressed dissatisfaction within the APC to remain patient and accept the outcome of the party's internal processes.
She noted that many party members equally experienced political disappointments during previous administrations but remained committed to preserving party unity and stability.
According to her, patience, loyalty and collective sacrifice remain essential ingredients for sustaining the achievements recorded under Governor Bago's administration.
Governor Moves to Calm Tensions
In apparent response to the growing concerns within the party, Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago recently convened a meeting with APC candidates and aspirants who were unsuccessful during the party primaries.
The session focused on strengthening internal cohesion and developing strategies for the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The governor appealed to all aspirants and party faithful to remain committed to the APC, the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and the New Niger Agenda of his administration.
He emphasised that unity and loyalty would be critical to ensuring the party's continued electoral success and delivery of democratic dividends to the people of Niger State.
Party Faces Critical Test
Despite the reconciliation efforts, political analysts believe the APC faces one of its most significant internal challenges since assuming power in Niger State.
Some observers have argued that the party leadership must intensify dialogue and inclusive consultations to prevent further internal divisions capable of affecting its electoral fortunes.
Whether the recent reconciliation efforts will be sufficient to stem the tide of dissatisfaction remains uncertain. However, one thing appears clear: as political activities gather momentum ahead of 2027, developments within the APC will remain a major factor in shaping the political landscape of Niger State.
Should the reported defections materialise, analysts say they could significantly alter political alignments and intensify competition among parties ahead of what promises to be one of the state's most closely watched governorship and legislative elections.
