Orphans at a government orphanage in Zamfara State have alleged poor medical care at the facility following the death of a nine-year-old girl, identified as Safiya, who they claimed was left without adequate treatment for several days.

The concerns were expressed in separate interviews granted to journalists in Gusau on Thursday.

According to some of the orphans and community members, Safiya fell ill and reportedly suffered medical complications for about five days without being referred to a hospital for proper treatment.

They alleged that the girl did not receive the medical attention she required throughout her illness. They further claimed that her remains were conveyed to the cemetery by a tricycle rider who volunteered to transport the body for burial, despite the presence of officials from the relevant ministry.

The incident has reportedly heightened concerns among residents and children at the orphanage over the welfare of the children and the quality of healthcare services provided at the facility.

Community members have called on the Zamfara State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development and other relevant authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding Safiya's death and ensure improved healthcare services for children in orphanages across the state.

As of the time of filing this report, officials of the orphanage had yet to issue an official response to the allegations. Efforts to reach the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Dr. Aisha Anka, for comment were unsuccessful.

Officials of the ministry declined to comment, stating that only the commissioner or any person authorised by her could speak on the matter.
