The African Action Congress (AAC) has condemned the killing of Kano-based social media influencer, political commentator and government critic, Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, demanding a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
In a statement issued on Thursday, September 10, 2026, and signed by the party’s Vice Presidential Candidate, Haruna Garba Magashi, the AAC said Dan Shagamu was killed at his residence in Gaida, Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State.
The party said the deceased had reportedly raised an alarm over threats to his life and appealed to the Kano State Government and security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police, for protection before his death.
According to the AAC, the reported failure to act on the warnings raised serious questions about why adequate measures were not taken to protect him.
The party therefore called for an immediate, thorough and transparent investigation to establish who planned, ordered and carried out the killing, as well as the identities and motives of those involved.
It also urged the authorities to determine whether the previous threats against Dan Shagamu were connected to his death, whether any individual or group had prior knowledge of the alleged attack, and whether there was any political, personal, communal or other motive behind the killing.
While welcoming reports of the arrest of suspects by the Kano State Police Command, the AAC stressed that arrest alone does not amount to justice, insisting that all persons genuinely connected to the crime must be identified, investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The party further called on the Kano State Government to take responsibility for ensuring the safety of citizens, arguing that its response should not be limited to issuing condolences after lives have already been lost.
On compensation, the AAC demanded that the appropriate authorities ensure that Dan Shagamu’s family receives Diyya (blood compensation), in accordance with Islamic principles and applicable law, without prejudice to the prosecution of the perpetrators.
The party described Dan Shagamu as a courageous voice who used his platform to speak on issues affecting society and governance.
It also called on the Kano State Government, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services and other relevant security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators and anyone who may have sponsored, facilitated or aided the killing are brought to justice.
The AAC extended its condolences to the deceased’s family, friends, colleagues and followers, and prayed for Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him Jannatul Firdaus.
