The Niger State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to securing timely accreditation for the medical programme of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, describing the process as a state priority rather than merely an institutional requirement.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Murtala Muhammad Bagana, stated this on Wednesday at the university shortly after an interface with the university management aimed at harmonising the requirements, conditions and terms stipulated by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) for the accreditation of the College of Health Sciences.
Dr. Bagana said the state government would not wait for the completion of the permanent teaching hospital before commencing full clinical training for medical students.
He disclosed that interim arrangements were already being put in place to make clinical training facilities in Minna operational as soon as possible, thereby ensuring continuity of training for current and incoming batches of medical students.
According to him, the ministry is working closely with the university management to ensure that all conditions set by the MDCN are met, stressing that students must receive the quality clinical education required to produce competent medical professionals.
The commissioner emphasised the state government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that IBB University meets all regulatory benchmarks within the shortest possible timeframe.
He said the timely accreditation of the medical programme was central to the state’s broader health-sector transformation agenda under the leadership of Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, particularly the administration’s efforts to strengthen human-resource capacity and improve healthcare delivery across Niger State.
The university management, led by the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Professor A.A. Aliyu, expressed appreciation for the state government’s proactive intervention and assured stakeholders that all identified gaps were being addressed systematically.
The meeting also agreed to sustain regular coordination through the Inter-Ministerial Task Team to monitor progress, address outstanding requirements and ensure full compliance ahead of the next MDCN accreditation visit.
With the concerted efforts of the Niger State Government, the Ministry of Health and IBB University management, the institution is expected to make significant progress towards securing full accreditation for its clinical medical training programme.
The development would mark an important milestone in strengthening medical education and healthcare capacity in Niger State.
