The Niger State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the unfortunate deaths of suspected illegal miners who were being detained at a facility of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Niger State Command.
The Commissioner of Police, Niger State Command, CP Adamu Abdullahi Elleman, mnips, ordered the immediate commencement of the investigation following the incident.
In a press release signed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Niger State Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, the directive followed an incident that occurred in the early hours of Thursday, September 17, 2026, when scores of persons arrested on suspicion of illegal mining were found dead while in custody.
Consequently, the Commissioner of Police directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Minna, to take charge of the investigation and unravel the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The CP called on family members, relatives and members of the public who may have credible information or other details that could assist the investigation to come forward to the SCID, Minna, and provide the necessary information.
He urged members of the public, residents, family members and acquaintances of the victims to remain calm and law-abiding and to cooperate with the investigative efforts.
The Commissioner assured the public that no stone would be left unturned in efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Police Command reiterated its commitment to upholding human rights provisions and ensuring accountability in the discharge of statutory responsibilities by law enforcement agencies.
