Oysters are an important aquatic species whose populations are increasingly threatened by climate change, environmental degradation, water pollution and unsustainable human activities. In Northern Nigeria, the gradual disappearance of oysters and other aquatic species is emerging as an environmental concern that deserves greater public attention.
For years, Ibrahima Yakubu, a science and environmental journalist and Head of Communication and Strategies at African Climate Reporters, has used journalism as a tool to draw attention to the threats facing oysters and other aquatic species. His work goes beyond reporting environmental problems, as he has consistently advocated practical solutions to protect biodiversity and prevent vulnerable species from disappearing.
Through years of environmental reporting, Yakubu has investigated and written stories on climate change, water pollution, habitat destruction, biodiversity loss and other environmental challenges affecting communities and aquatic ecosystems. Their participation can make conservation programmes more effective and sustainable.
Seventh, journalists should be encouraged to report more consistently on threatened aquatic species. Yakubu believes the media has an important role to play in exposing environmental threats, explaining scientific evidence and highlighting solutions. Regular reporting can keep the issue on the public and political agenda and encourage authorities to take action.
Finally, stronger partnerships are needed. Governments, scientists, journalists, conservationists, civil society organisations, traditional institutions and local communities should work together to protect oysters and other vulnerable aquatic species. International environmental organisations can also provide technical support, research assistance and funding for conservation programmes.
