Amnesty International has condemned the killing of renowned Islamic preacher Sheikh Yahaya Masussuka by gunmen in Dutsin-Ma, Katsina State, and called on Nigerian authorities to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
In a statement, Amnesty International Nigeria said the cleric was killed by gunmen riding motorcycles as he stepped out of his house to attend his usual evening preaching session.
The organisation described the incident as brutal and urged the Nigerian authorities to launch an immediate and effective investigation into the killing.
It stressed that anyone suspected of involvement in the attack must be brought to justice through a lawful process.
Amnesty International noted that Sheikh Masussuka had consistently used his preaching to promote cooperation, peaceful coexistence, interfaith dialogue and understanding among Muslim faithful.
The organisation also highlighted his advocacy against violent extremism and radicalisation, describing these as notable aspects of his religious activities.
According to the statement, the late cleric had faced threats to his life and intimidation throughout his lifetime.
Amnesty International called on the authorities to ensure that the circumstances surrounding his killing are thoroughly investigated and that justice is served.
