Prof. Ibrahim Maqari, an imam of the National Mosque in Abuja, has warned that Nigeria risks facing a dangerous crisis if authorities fail to urgently introduce legal measures to curb inflammatory statements directed at fellow citizens.
Maqari cautioned that a crisis capable of affecting both innocent people and those responsible could be approaching, stressing the need for government intervention to prevent reckless public utterances from escalating tensions within society.
In a statement, the cleric strongly condemned what he described as “vile remarks” made by some vigilantes, distancing Islam from the comments.
“We strongly condemn and denounce these vile remarks made by these foolish vigilantes. By Allah, their statements do not represent Islam,” he said.
He called on the authorities to urgently enact a law that would establish limits on statements made against fellow citizens, warning that failure to act could expose the country to further tension and possible conflict.
The cleric's warning highlights concerns about the potential consequences of inflammatory rhetoric in a society where public statements can deepen divisions and threaten peaceful coexistence.
His remarks also underscore the importance of responsible public communication and the need to address speech that could incite hostility or violence, while ensuring that any legal measures respect fundamental rights and the rule of law.
