Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has said his administration’s “rescue mission” is transforming the state through investments in critical sectors, including infrastructure, education and healthcare.

Lawal made the assertion on Thursday as the state commenced activities to mark its 30th anniversary, with the governor commissioning a series of infrastructure projects as part of the celebrations.

The anniversary activities, which coincided with Nigeria’s Independence Day celebrations, were attended by Zamfara’s pioneer Military Administrator, Col. Jibril Bala Yakubu (rtd.), former governors Ahmed Sani Yarima and Mahmud Aliyu Shinkafi, as well as other dignitaries.

Speaking at the National Independence Day parade and Zamfara’s 30th Anniversary celebration at the Trade Fair Complex in Gusau, Lawal said the state had moved from what he described as a period of despair into an era of “clear execution, transparency and sustainable development.”

The governor said Zamfara, created on October 1, 1996, had recorded significant milestones over the past three decades, urging residents to sustain unity and collectively contribute to the state’s development.

“As we look forward to the next decade, we must understand that true independence demands collective responsibility. Government alone can’t do this,” Lawal said.

He called on traditional rulers, religious scholars, civil servants, traders and youths to unite and put aside ethnic, political and sectarian divisions in order to protect peace and promote development.

On Friday, Lawal commissioned Phase III of the renovated and modernised J.B. Yakubu Secretariat in Gusau, describing the project as part of his administration’s efforts to rebuild government institutions and create what he called a modern, efficient, technology-enabled and results-oriented public service.

The secretariat houses several ministries, departments and agencies responsible for various aspects of governance and service delivery in the state.

According to Lawal, the modernisation of the facility would improve coordination among ministries, departments and agencies, strengthen communication and institutional collaboration, and facilitate faster implementation of government decisions.

“Today’s occasion is significant as we welcome His Excellency, Col. Jibril Bala Yakubu (Rtd.), Zamfara’s pioneer Military Administrator, after whom this Secretariat is named. As Zamfara marks thirty years since its creation, it’s fitting that a leader from our foundation is here to witness this milestone,” he said.

Earlier, Yakubu commended Lawal’s administration for what he described as its achievements, particularly in infrastructure, education and healthcare.

Also on Friday, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, commissioned the reconstructed and remodelled Jumu’at Mosque, popularly known as Yardole, along with its adjoining shopping complex.

The mosque, named after Malam Sambo Dan Ashafa, an Islamic scholar associated with the Sokoto Jihad led by Sheikh Uthman Ibn Fodiyo, is also expected to serve as an Islamic and research learning centre.
