Kaduna
state high court 3, presided by Justice Gideon Kurada has ordered the counsels
involved in the case brought by KDSG against Sheikh Zakzaky and his wife to get
ready for a speedy trial of the case that has been lagging since 2018.
The
Judge took the decision after he reserved ruling to the preliminary objection
raised by the counsel of the defendants at the last adjourned date, citing the
fact that no plea was taken from the accused all this while since almost two
years ago.
Unlike
what many people assumed, it was today that the case was started in enerst. And
as the eight count charges were read out to Sheikh Ibraheem Yaqoub Zakzaky,
leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, he described them as ‘rubbish and
nonsense.’
Both
the defendants are standing trial on eight counts which include culpable
homicide, causing grievous hurt, unlawful assembly and disturbance of the public
peace, among other allegations.
The
duo, who were brought to court on Tuesday morning amidst tight security, with
pressman barred from the court room had moved a preliminary objection, not a no
case submission on August 07, to which the Judge reserved the ruling until
after the case.
Barrister
Abubakar Marshall holding brief for the lead counsel to the defendants Femi
Falana SAN, informed the press after the court proceedings that the Judge has
adjourned the matter to 18 and 19 November for hearing witnesses invoved in the
case and also gave the order that the defendants need not come to the court at
the hearing.
The
Prosecution Counsel, Dari Bayero also told pressmen that they are ready to call
their witnesses when hearing on the case resumes in November.
