DAILY STRUGGLE newspaper reported that the West Africa Progressive Youth Council has called on youth across the ECOWAS countries to rise and salvage West Africa from sinking. 

The council also charged the youth across the continent to take advantage of the regional integration policies, and explore opportunities in ICT, trade, and agriculture among others for the development of their region. The call was made by Ambassador Ahmad Abdulgafar the Secretary-General to the Council during the Annual KWAME NKRUMAH Youth leadership summit that was held at the National Agricultural Extension Research Liaison Service (NAERLS) Multipurpose Hall of the prestigious Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria on Saturday 28th January 2023 

The keynote speaker, Prof. Abdoulie M. S. Tekanyi a Professor of Telecommunication, and a citizen of Gambia charged the diplomatic youth to take advantage of ICT to drive the economy of the region. He also emphasized the need for the youth to emulate the doctrine of Dr Kwame Nkrumah. He said; "If Kwame Nkrumah was to come back to life today, he will weep because of the state of affairs on the Continent". 

The special guest of honour, Hajiya Asma'u Abdulaziz Yari, the wife of the Former Chairman of the Nigerian Governor's Forum who join the summit virtually also called on the youth and women to embrace entrepreneurship and skills development. She said the youth and women constitute a larger portion of the population in West Africa which most harnesses for sustained economic growth and development, she also used the medium to encourage the ECOWAS members to give more attention to girl-child education, drastic reduction of maternal mortality rate, Child nutrition and inclusion of Women in governance across the ECOWAS members state.

The chairman of the occasion, Ibrahim Jibrin, Mason Director of Procurement Nigeria College of Aviation Technology Zaria, called on the youth in the region to shun drugs, cybercrime, religious extremism and violence. He also advises them to channel their energy towards skills acquisition, ICT and entrepreneurship.

Other speakers at the Summit include Dr Abdul Ahmadu of the Department of Political Science and International Studies of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and Mr Kader Ben Daud from Cote d'Ivoire, Mal. Habibu Mainasara, Ahmad Hashim the gubernatorial candidate of ADC in Zamfara State.

Dr Ahmad Hashim charged the youth to take over the affairs of the country by voting in candidates who can help them realise their potential, support their dreams and develop youth-friendly policies that will ensure sustainable development in their states, countries and region.

Comr. Abdula'zeez Sulaiman and Comr. Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi of the Coalition of Northern Groups were ably represented by the National Coordinator of the Students wing Comr. Emushe Gimba Bokunga lamented on the new naira redesign policy, scarcity, and skyrocket of PMS products, hike in Electricity tariff and the wost hike in tuition. She on behalf of the CNG called on the diplomats present at the Summit and all well-meaning Nigerians to rise up and resist these policies as they are factors that can hinder sustainable development in Nigeria and west Africa at large.
