An Elderstatesman Sen. Salisu Matori in Bauchi has urged the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) had refuted the notion that the Niger Republic impasse could concern only the Northern part of Nigeria.
It could be recalled that the Political impasse in the Niger Republic was followed by the coup d’etat of the democratically elected administration of Mohamed Bazoum.
Matori stated this while talking to Journalists on Saturday in Bauchi, saying, that the impasse would affect all Nigerians because Nigeria and Nigerien are the Same.
He disagrees the Niger imbroglio only concerns northern Nigeria and therefore should be handled with levity.
"It's high time Nigerians should adopt the maturity that the whole world is expecting Nigeria to do.
"That means we must stop looking at every issue from a very narrow perspective or a small window." He said.
Sen. Matori noted that waging war on the military that took over the country would augur well for the West African region.
The situation in Niger is a cause for concern and sad for especially the neighboring countries.
"The military option should be the very last option on the table, the last resort," Matori said.
Sen. Matori who is the Vice Chairman of Senators Forum, North East calls on stakeholders to prioritize more diplomatic and political conciliation and collective efforts to the crisis.
He said dialogue, cooperation, and negotiation are the most effective means to establish lasting peace and stability in the region.
"It is equally essential for the international community to also intervene in the diplomatic process of resolving the impasse in Niger republic," he said.
Matori said he has confidence in the Chairman of ECOWAS’ Authority of Heads of State and Government President Bola Tinubu to resolve the crisis diplomatically.
He appealed to the ECOWAS Chairman to encourage other regional leaders to strengthen political and diplomatic options and other means to resolve the political impasse in Niger.
