All the people I spoke with on the phone in Mangu LGA of Plateau State confirmed that they are in distress. The attacks and reprisals have continued since mid 2023.
It is devastating that President Bola Tinubu and Governor Caleb Mutfwang are watching the cycle of violence without any intervention.
Beside the cost on human lives, the implication of this crisis is multidimensional; on the town, neighbouring communities, neighbouring local government areas, state’s IGR, food (in)security, among others too numerous to mention.
With a population of at least 294, 931 people, it’s the third most populous LG in the state. And, the Mangu market that holds every Friday known as the maize market that hosts buys from all parts of the country.
Through Mangu it’s easier to travel to Wase, Langtang, Pankshin, Kanam, Pankshin and other areas like Ibi of Taraba State, Northeastern part of the country.
Nigerian authorities must look at this objectively and proffer a lasting solution no matter whose ox is gored. They must go beyond lip service.
Press statements and visits will not stop this madness that has thrived for more than two decades; but dialogue and justice will. This madness must stop!
