The AAC party said the idea was first made known to Nigerian citizens by the party and Omoyele Sowore, its presidential candidate during the electioneering period in 2019, adding that it was high time for Nigeria to embrace a system that would stop making politics a life career.
The African Action Congress (AAC) has said Nigeria needs to adopt a unicameral legislative system of government by scrapping the upper chamber of the legislative arm, known as the Senate.
The party stated this while supporting the views of a prominent economic analyst, Mr Kalu Aja, who proposed abolishing both the Senate and the House of Representatives to reduce costs.
The AAC party said the idea was first made known to Nigerian citizens by the party and Omoyele Sowore, its presidential candidate during the electioneering period in 2019, adding that it was high time for Nigeria to embrace a system that would stop making politics a life career.
The party said, “The AAC was the only party courageous enough to campaign with this idea since 2019. Not only did we campaign for a unicameral legislative system, we also suggested that the House of Reps be made part-time.
“No one should be a career politician, especially with the woeful human development indices that describe us today. We need everyone working and contributing to the GDP.
“Imagine a Dr (Bukola) Saraki attending to patients from Monday to Thursday, to then do law-making on Friday/Saturday,” the party wrote.
Saraki is a medical doctor and a former Senate President.
In May 2022, Sowore also noted that the operation of a bicameral legislative system was too expensive for a country like Nigeria.
Therefore, he vowed to abolish the Senate and divert the public resources saved from there to the education sector of the country, if elected.
"If you ask me, we will abolish the Senate because we don't need the bicameral legislative arm. We can't afford it.
"That means we change our constitution," Mr Sowore declared.
He continued: "I have always said that those who are asking for revolution are also asking for a lot of things to change in the constitution.
“As soon as we win, we go to a constitutional conference where we change the Nigerian Constitution through a referendum and let Nigeria adopt the real constitution because the Constitution as it is now is a fraudulent document created by the military."
