Human rights lawyer and Convener of Concerned Nigerians, Deji Adeyanju, has issued a statement commending President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for directing the Customs Service to return seized food items to their rightful owners. In addition to applauding this move, Adeyanju urges President Tinubu to take further steps to address insecurity and alleviate food scarcity in the country.

Adeyanju acknowledges President Tinubu's directive as a positive step towards tackling hunger and food insecurity in Nigeria. "President Tinubu's directive to the Customs Service reflects his responsiveness to the concerns and criticisms raised by the public. The prevailing insecurity caused by banditry and other criminal activities has significantly impacted the agricultural sector. Many farmers are unable to go to their farms due to the fear of attacks, resulting in reduced agricultural productivity and food scarcity", the statement said.

Adeyanju highlighted how farmers' inability to access their farms due to security concerns has led to reduced agricultural productivity and exacerbated food scarcity. "President Tinubu's action to release seized food items addresses one aspect of the broader challenge of food security in the country".

While commending President Tinubu's responsiveness, Adeyanju calls on the President to temporarily remove import duties on all imported food items. This additional measure is proposed to help alleviate the current challenges faced by Nigerians and further address food scarcity issues.

"This measure will help alleviate the current challenges faced by Nigerians", he said.

Adeyanju's statement underscores the importance of proactive measures to ensure that Nigerians have access to an adequate and affordable food supply.

"I commend the President's ability to listen to critics and respond accordingly, as demonstrated by his recent decisions", he concluded.
