Niger State Government has joined forces with the Abuja Electricity Development Company (AEDC) to launch the "Light Up Niger" project, aimed at enhancing electricity provision in the state.
The collaborative effort between the state government and AEDC is poised to ensure a consistent power supply to residents of Niger State. This initiative, spearheaded by Farmer Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, signifies a significant step towards addressing the electricity needs of Nigerlites.
Bago emphasized the importance of power supply for development, particularly as the state ventures into industrialization and processing activities. He highlighted Niger State's significant contribution to Nigeria's electricity generation, with four hydro dams supplying about 60% of the nation's electricity.
Furthermore, Bago expressed confidence that the "Light Up Niger" project would tackle challenges such as metering issues prevalent in the state. He revealed that the Electricity Act has been localized in the state, leading to the establishment of the Niger State Electricity Regulatory Commission. Plans are underway to finalize the necessary paperwork for the commission to facilitate the state's power generation and distribution.
Eng. Chijioke Okwuokenye, Chief Operating Officer of AEDC, lauded the collaboration, noting that the project aims to implement measures for sustainable electricity supply in Niger State. He acknowledged the support of the Bago-led administration in providing transformers to communities, underscoring the importance of such assistance for the private sector's viability. Okwuokenye assured continued partnership with the state government to achieve the desired outcomes.
The state government's recent ultimatum demanding improved power supply or withdrawal from AEDC has spurred action, resulting in the initiation of the "Light Up Niger" project. This endeavor signifies a proactive approach to addressing the state's electricity challenges and heralds a brighter future for Nigerlites.
