Daily Struggle
Newspaper embarked on a visit to Hunkuyi General Hospital in Kudan Local
Government, Kaduna State, prompted by numerous complaints from the community
regarding its deteriorating condition.
Upon arrival, Daily
Struggle had the opportunity to meet with the hospital's Director, who received
our correspondent warmly, though remained silent.
Subsequently, our team
meticulously explored every corner of the hospital premises to assess its
condition.
A fundamental aspect of
any healthcare facility is its cleanliness. Regrettably, our investigation
found the hospital lacking in this regard, both internally and externally.
The inspection extended
to the hospital’s wards, revealing a dire situation: the absence of bed sheets
on all beds.
Another critical
requirement for any hospital, particularly for the admission of pregnant women,
is the availability of oxygen equipment. Shockingly, the hospital failed in
this aspect, with no oxygen equipment whatsoever. Consequently, patients were
admitted under perilous conditions.
Furthermore, our
investigation found that only a few of the hospital's toilets were functional,
while the staff quarters were overrun by rats, with staff members struggling
for space to sleep.
This appalling reality
highlights the dire circumstances faced within Nigerian healthcare facilities.
Our inquiry into
staffing revealed a shortage of professionals, with the hospital operating with
minimal personnel to sustain its operations.
The pertinent question
now arises: who bears responsibility for the deplorable state of Hunkuyi
General Hospital? Is it the government, the affluent members of the community,
or the impoverished residents?
The urgent need for
intervention is evident, as the continued neglect of this vital healthcare
institution jeopardizes the well-being of countless individuals relying on its
services.
