Bauchi State University Gadau (BASUG) has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental conservation, pledging full support for initiatives aimed at preserving the environment.
During the Plantation of 1,000 Tree Seedlings and the launch of an orchard by Offshore Lab, supported by Shell Development Company, Professor Fatima Tahir, the Vice Chancellor of BASUG, emphasized the university’s dedication to this cause. The event was held at the new ICT complex on the university’s main campus.
Professor Tahir commended Offshore Lab for their initiative, highlighting the importance of environmental conservation. She noted that the timing of this project aligns perfectly with the university's longstanding goal of establishing an orchard.
"In as much as the University always had this idea of wanting to establish something like this, I must say that this is the conception of Offshore Lab and also with the support of Shell Development Company," she stated.
The Vice Chancellor explained that the university provided the necessary space for the orchard, acknowledging its significance not only to the institution but also to the broader community. "All we did was to give them space for them to be able to establish the orchard. They have done their part, it is now our turn to do our part," she added.
Professor Tahir urged students, especially those in the Environmental Conservation Club, to take ownership of the orchard. She emphasized that while the university will support the project, the students will play a crucial role in ensuring the growth and sustainability of the trees.
"Taking care of these trees is not going to be your sole responsibility, but the university is also going to play its part. However, you are going to play a major role in ensuring that these trees you have planted grow and eventually produce fruits," she encouraged.
Mr. Emeka Obiwulu, CEO of Offshore Lab, explained that the plantation project aims to build on the university's existing environmental conservation efforts. He stressed the importance of taking ownership to ensure sustainability and assured continuous monitoring of the project.
He advised the students to adopt the trees and take care of them, reiterating the Vice Chancellor's call for student involvement in the conservation effort.
