324 Youth to Receive N-HYPPADEC Business Starter Packs in Plateau

The Managing Director of the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Commission (N-HYPPADEC), Alhaji Abubakar Yelwa, has urged Nigerian youth to participate in the commission’s empowerment program to become self-employed.

Alhaji Yelwa made this appeal on Thursday during a stakeholder engagement in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State. The discussion focused on the best approach for the commission to distribute starter packs to trained youth in various skills and business ventures.

He stated that the commission has trained beneficiaries under the 2022/2023 Youth Transformation Programme and that starter packs will soon be distributed to each participant.

Represented by the commission’s Assistant Director of Research and Planning in the state office, Mr. Pam Jidauna, the MD mentioned that customized starter packs would be provided based on the youths' areas of interest.

“We want to avoid a situation where the starter packs are given out and then discarded. Our goal is for these individuals to become self-employed and create job opportunities for others, contributing to the development of Plateau State and Nigeria,” he said.

The Plateau State N-HYPPADEC Coordinator, Alhaji Abubakar S. Tanko, noted that there had been complaints from trainers about some youths not paying attention during the training, instead focusing solely on collecting stipends meant for transportation.

“The commission is concerned that some youths may not use the starter packs as intended, but rather sell them. Therefore, we are collaborating with community leaders, parents, and other stakeholders to address any potential misuse and ensure that the items are used for their intended purposes,” he said.

In his remarks, the State Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Hon. Bashir Datti, commended the N-HYPPADEC intervention as a positive development for Plateau's youth.

“We have 324 youths who were trained by the commission for the 2022/2023 period, and although there were delays in distributing the starter packs, it is now being addressed. I commend the MD of N-HYPPADEC and the President for this initiative. I assure the commission that our youths are not lazy and will utilize the starter packs as intended,” Datti said.
