The former National President of the Miyyeti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Alhaji Hussaini Yusuf Bosso, has urged President Ahmed Bola Tinubu to appoint a Fulani as the Minister in the newly created Ministry of Livestock.
Alhaji Hussaini Bosso requested that the president consult with relevant Fulani socio-cultural and critical stakeholders to identify a credible and reliable Fulani candidate for the ministerial position.
He suggested that appointing a Fulani as the Minister of Livestock would further foster a harmonious and cordial relationship between farmers and herders in the country. According to him, the appointment of a Fulani to head the ministry, as created by President Tinubu, would be seen as "putting the right leg in the right hole," ensuring the ministry fulfils its mandate to meet the expectations of both herders and farmers.
Speaking with journalists in his office in Minna on Wednesday, Alhaji Hussaini Bosso explained that the creation of the Ministry of Livestock by the current administration is the best thing that has happened to pastoralists in the political history of the country. He noted that the Fulanis in the country have long requested the creation of the ministry from successive administrations without any positive response. However, within just one year of his administration, President Tinubu has been magnanimous enough to create the Ministry of Livestock.
He pointed out that the idea of establishing the ministry under the current administration was proposed to President Tinubu by Governor Mohammed Umar Bago, who also created the Ministry of Nomadic and Pastoralist Affairs in Niger State and appointed a Fulani as the commissioner.
Explaining further, Alhaji Hussaini Bosso said the Ministry of Livestock would be responsible for the vaccination and treatment of livestock, inspection of animal slaughter, and monitoring of abattoirs, among other duties, while the Ministry of Agriculture would focus on the provision of farm inputs to farmers.
Alhaji Hussaini Bosso commended President Tinubu's vision for taking the bold step of creating the Ministry of Livestock within his first year in office and assured that the Fulani communities would continue to support his administration. He also appreciated Governor Mohammed Umar Bago for his efforts in creating the Niger State Ministry of Nomadic and Pastoral Affairs and called on other governors to establish similar ministries in their respective states.
