Seven inmates have been freed from the Zaria Correctional Centre with a token of ten thousand naira each to serve as transport fares to their respective destinations.

The inmates, all males, were from both religious backgrounds—Islam and Christianity—and were largely individuals with minor and bailable offenses.

The group, under the auspices of "Teejay Media Centre," said the gesture was part of an initiative to mark the one-year anniversary of Dr. Abas Tajudeen as Speaker of the National Assembly.

Malam Lawal Shehu Aliyu, leader of the group, while speaking to Daily Struggle in Zaria, said assorted foodstuffs and basic needs, including pads, detergent, soap, and a token sum of ten thousand naira, were also presented to each of the 50 Vesicovaginal Fistula (VVF) patients in Gambo Sawaba General Hospital, Zaria.

He said the group realized that VVF patients were "mostly neglected and abandoned" and required routine assistance, hence the reason for the gesture.

"We have also visited and donated cartons of footballs, children's drinks, noodles, and bags of rice to the orphanage home in Tukur-Tukur, Zaria.

"This is also to identify and show love to the children who lost their parents, as well as provide them with the joy that most of our children enjoy while at home," he said.

Aliyu, who is the Special Assistant to the Speaker on New Media, further stated that a similar gesture was extended to 50 patients each at ABU Teaching Hospital, Tudun Wada, and Muslim Hospital in Dan Magaji, where ten thousand naira was presented to each of them to alleviate their hardship.

According to him, the sum of three point five million naira (N3.5m) has been expended for the one-day memorial visit.

In their separate remarks, Ibrahim Rambo, Comptroller of Zaria Correctional Service, Sarki Muhammad Awai, Home Leader of Tukur-Tukur Orphanage Home, and Malama Maimuna Ibrahim, Head of Nurses at Gambo Sawaba General Hospital, Kofar Gayan, Zaria, applauded the gesture.

They urged other groups, non-governmental organizations, and individuals to emulate the gesture by assisting generously to complement government efforts in improving the social well-being of the citizens.
