A team from the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) has provided further details on the search and rescue operations following the tanker explosion at Essa Ward in Katcha Local Government, along the Agaie-Bida Road. The tragic incident, which claimed the lives of over 50 people, occurred at around 12:30 a.m. on Sunday.
The accident involved four vehicles: a tanker, a truck coming from Wudil in Kano State, a forklift truck, and a pickup belonging to locals that was transporting goods to Agaie for the Sunday weekly market. A total of 52 people were given a mass burial at the scene of the incident.
The rescue operations were carried out by NSEMA, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Red Cross, the police, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the Department of State Services (DSS), as well as the council chairmen of Agaie and Katcha Local Government Areas. The District Heads of Badeggi and Bakeko, representing His Royal Highness, the Etsu Nupe, along with local communities near the scene, also assisted in the efforts.
