Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has expressed deep sadness over the recent boat mishap on the Niger River, upstream of the Jebba Dam, in the Gbajibo community of Mokwa Local Government Area. The tragic incident claimed the lives of many, including women and children.
In a condolence message delivered by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, Governor Bago described the incident as both unfortunate and heartbreaking.
He expressed concern over the recurring boat accidents in the state in recent years, stressing that the government will intensify efforts to enforce strict safety measures to curb the alarming trend.
The governor extended his heartfelt sympathy to the leadership and residents of Mokwa Local Government, as well as the families of the victims. He offered prayers for the departed souls, asking Allah to grant them eternal rest, and prayed for comfort for the bereaved and swift recovery for those injured.
Reports indicate that the boat, carrying around 300 people—mostly women and children—was en route from Mundi community for a Maulud celebration when it capsized on the Niger River.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), along with relevant government agencies, local divers, and volunteers, is currently engaged in search and rescue operations. So far, about 150 people have been rescued alive, while 16 bodies have been recovered.
